Gladiators fall to Stingrays
By staff reports
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. -- David de Kastrozza scored twice including the game winner late in the second to lead the South Carolina Stingrays over the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3 Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
South Carolina (5-7-1) jumped all over the Gladiators (8-3-3) in the first period, taking a 3-0 lead at the end of 20 minutes. Defenseman Bryan Schmidt made it 1-0 at the 8:25 mark on the powerplay, and Tommy Goebel picked up his fourth of the season on the man advantage for a 2-0 edge.
David de Kastrozza scored his first of the night, chipping the puck off the stick of defenseman Dave Phillips in front of the net and right by goalie Chris Carrozzi to cap a dominant period for the Rays.
Gwinnett responded in the second. Mike Forney notched his third on assists from Bendickson and Roberts to cut the deficit to two on the powerplay just 36 seconds in. Will Colbert hammered in his second of the season on a rebound in front to make it 3-2 with helpers from Forney and Galivan, and Ian McKenzie buried a fantastic feed from Dan Kissel on the far post to tie the game at 10:50.
South Carolina came back at 15:08, as de Kastrozza tallied his second of the night and third of his rookie season to make it 4-3 at the end of two periods.
Gwinnett had several chances late on a 5-on-3 in the third to draw even, but couldn’t solve Todd Ford.
Ford stopped 25 of 28 shots, while Chris Carrozzi had 20 saves in a losing effort. Mike Forney paced the offense with a goal and an assist, while Aaron Bendickson had an assist and a third period goal overturned by an offsides call in his return to the Gladiators lineup from the AHL.
