Dawsonville motor sport complex up and runningBy Marc Eggers Staff DAWSONVILLE – The Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville is open for business.
Despite initial efforts to prevent its construction, Director Jeremy Porter announced that construction of the track is complete and the driving course is fully operational. The 152-acre facility off Duck Thurmond Road describes itself as "the first green, sustainable motorsports facility and country club of its kind. Instead of the typical country club with a golf course at its center, at AMPs heart will be a 2-mile road course." Initial concerns that led to legal action against the planned park called attention to noise and crowd problems. The courts ruled in the favor of AMP. When asked how neighbors of the Park have responded since its opening two weeks ago, Porter said, "It’s actually been very good. The neighbors…are pretty shocked about the limits of sound and it’s been positive thus far. We’ve got major sound limitations here." Regarding crowds, Porter explained that their business plan is not intended to attract numbers. "We appeal to a smaller market. Our demographic is your neighbor that does not watch racing but wants the chance to ‘stretch the legs’ of their car without blue lights in the rearview mirror, and a place to entertain clients." Porter added that the complex is green and sustainable. "We are doing things like…re-irrigating the site with used water…using solar powered signage…our toilets are solar powered…the guard rail around the track is recycled. We’re just looking for opportunities to launch green technology." First planned late in 2008, the Park now boasts that existing rental garages are 100 percent leased and pre-rentals for the next phase of construction are 65 percent contracted.
