WILSON, N.C. (AP) -- The state chapter of the NAACP is speaking out in support of a man from Wilson who says he's wrongly imprisoned for killing a man at his home in Georgia.

The president of the state NAACP, the Rev. William Barber, held a news conference Friday in Wilson to talk about John McNeil, who's serving a life sentence. Also speaking was George Leach, president of the NAACP's Wilson branch, and McNeil's wife, Anita.

McNeil was convicted of murder for the December 2005 shooting death of Brian Epp, who McNeil says charged at him with a knife outside his home. Barber says McNeil was afraid for his life and for his son's life.

Anita McNeil says she's focused on getting justice for her husband.

The Georgia Supreme Court upheld McNeil's conviction.
