WINDER - Barrow County Emergency officials hope some safety training for citizens will boil down to a safer county. The county's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will hold the training classes next month.

CERT President Mike Wilson said they train students in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.

Wilson said the idea is that those trained help neighbors or co-workers in emergencies when first responders are on the way.

"If at least one family member in every household would take this class it would make a difference in the safety of the community," Wilson said.

Those that join CERT after taking the initial classes, continue to train monthly.

The next class starts August 16 and runs though October 4th. The classes are free and are held at Barrow County Emergency Services Station 6 on Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
