Free family-friendly Wilderness Survival WeekendBy Staff DAWSONVILLE - Amicalola Falls State Park is hosting a weekend filled with programs on basic wilderness skills such as fire building and orienteering. Wilderness Survival Weekend takes place Saturday August 11 and Sunday August 12, with programs beginning at 10:00 both days.
This is a family-friendly event, with no fees or registration required; however, the $5 parking fee does apply. Try your hand at turning grass into useful cordage, or learn what should be in your survival kit. A basic edible & medicinal plant hike will take place Sunday at 3:00, with historical uses highlighted. In-between programs, participants can explore the tumbling waterfall - one of Georgia’s 7 Natural Wonders. The park offers several hiking trails, access to Springer Mountain via the Appalachian Trail approach, and wheelchair/stroller accessible paths providing views of the waterfall and surrounding mountains. Amicalola Falls State Park offers free public programs and special events throughout the year.
